The third golf major of the season will be the 2023 U.S. Open at the Los Angeles Country Club beginning Thursday, June 15. Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up over $8,700 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.
McClure’s model predicted Jon Rahm would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. And at the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm’s second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scottie Scheffler winning in 2022.
In addition, the model included Nick Hardy and Davis Riley in its best bets to win the 2023 Zurich Classic. That bet hit at +4500, and for the entire tournament, McClure’s best bets returned over $1,100. McClure’s best bets also included Jason Day winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, even though he hadn’t won a PGA Tour event since 2018.

Top 2023 U.S. Open predictions
One major surprise the model is calling for at the U.S. Open 2023: Cameron Smith, a six-time PGA Tour winner and one of the top favorites, stumbles this week and barely cracks the top 15. He won the 2022 Open Championship, but he has not finished in the top five at either of the major championships this season. Smith was outside the top 30 at the Masters in April, shooting 4-over-par.
He finished ninth at the PGA Championship in the second major of the year, but was never in contention for the title. Smith has struggled at the U.S. Open in recent years, failing to place inside the top 35 since his debut in 2015. He has missed the cut in each of the last two U.S. Open tournaments, so the model does not see any value in backing Smith at short golf odds in this year’s edition. See which golfers to fade here.
Another surprise: Collin Morikawa, a 22-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Morikawa has been one of the top US Open contenders at the third major tournament of the season, posting back-to-back top-five finishes in 2021 and 2022. He has six top-10 finishes in his last nine appearances at major championships, so he continues to be a strong choice as a longshot.
Morikawa began his PGA Tour career with 22 consecutive made cuts, which ranks second only to Tiger Woods’ 25-cut streak to open a career. His remarkable consistency has continued at the top tournaments of the year, including a tenth-place finish at the Masters earlier this year.
