Brown Announces Nearly $1.5 Million for the Ohio State University to Advance Clean Hydrogen Technology

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced $1,499,238 to The Ohio State University (OSU) to develop a system to produce clean hydrogen from natural gas with carbon capture and sequestration. Investing in this technology will help make clean hydrogen technology cheaper to produce, which has the potential to increase the affordability and availability of fuel for electricity generation and electric vehicles, improve U.S. energy and environmental resiliency by cutting carbon emissions, and support good-paying, union jobs for Ohioans.

“We are in the midst of a renewable energy boom that will create jobs and economic development opportunities for communities across Ohio,” said Brown. “The technology of the future – from clean hydrogen to semiconductors – will be developed in Ohio and made in Ohio. This investment will support growing industries in Ohio and help us to bury the term the rust belt.”

Because of Ohio’s skilled workers and existing efforts to use creative, high-tech solutions to reduce emissions and develop next-generation energy technology, the state is poised to play a leading role in the future of renewable energy manufacturing.

In January, Brown announced $3.8 Million for OSU to develop electric vehicle battery technology, and in December 2022 Brown also announced that in 2024, Honda’s Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville will begin producing Honda’s new hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV). The investment announced today will help develop the technology to make Honda’s Marysville plant successful.

This grant was awarded by the United States Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management.
