Asonahores strongly rejects U.S. travel alert

The Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic (Asonahores) said it disagrees with the United States security alert, level 2, for its citizens when traveling to the Caribbean country due to the alleged increase in crime.

Asonahores said that it does not share the criteria of the United States that has raised the alert on crime in the Dominican Republic since there has been no evidence in recent months of any event in our tourist poles that would motivate such action.

“For our association, this alert comes as a surprise, since the Dominican Republic continues to be one of the safest tourist destinations in the entire region, taking into account the number of events per 100,000 foreign visitors,” he said.

He said he hopes that the United States can rectify this alert in the shortest possible time and that we continue to promote good relations and collaboration between our countries.

The U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic issued a security alert urging its citizens to take extra precautions due to increased crime.

“Violent crime, including armed robberies, homicides and sexual assaults, are of concern throughout the Dominican Republic,” it states through the travel advisory, which places the national territory at level 2.
